"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The group are speaking from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound toughness called for a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

But Haim will consistently be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
