The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Under a tenth of people that would benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy can access them, states the global health agency as it publishes its first advice on the therapies.

With over a billion individuals worldwide currently obese, it is advocating for broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

According to projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with thorough and lifelong support," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are significant obstacles to broad access to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing substantial weight, explains the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even in the current most favorable outlook, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The guideline encourages governments and firms to widen access, through strategies like patent sharing.

A patent on a key compound – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in several nations in 2026.

How Obesity Drugs Work

The injections mimick a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and enhance the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

Individuals typically see weight reduction after several weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.

Evidence points to people may see weight return a year later of stopping the drug, as their typical appetite return.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your risk for experiencing diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Excess weight impacts people in all nations and was responsible for millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
