A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
