Defense Department Report Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in question included particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
