RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
